The War on Circular Logic

Now this is scary.

The Bush administration is seriously considering a declaration saying that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is a foreign terrorist organization, The New York Times reports.

As far as we know, the IRGC is the country’s largest military body, so such a move would be akin to another country labeling the United States Army as a terrorist. (And based on some of its actions in the Middle Eastern conflicts, maybe it should be.)

I normally don’t talk very much politics on this blog, but I felt the need to spell out what the Times’ headline story does not.

We know the Bush administration has declared a seemingly unending “war on terrorism.” And Iran’s armed forces could soon be labeled “terrorists.” Are you following me here?

The same circular logic the White House used to trick Americans into believing Iraq had ties to the Sept. 11 attacks (and guess what? It didn’t), forcing an unjustified invasion of the country, may be used for Iran.

If all goes wrong, we may soon be looking at a full-scale war with a nuclear-equipped nation that has plenty of friends — Afghanistan’s president for one. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but with U.S. troops currently in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran is probably starting to feel a little crowded on its borders.

If there’s a World War III, I fear the U.S. may be the bad guy this time around.
